Behind the Graphics: An Independent Designer's Bar in Osaka, Japan

An independent graphic design studio. A members-only bar. A collection of wearable artwork. All connected by one place in Osaka.

In Nishishinsaibashi, just outside Osaka's lively Amerikamura district, there is a small members-only bar called bar & design nextHome.

Located on the sixth floor of a building, nextHome is more than a place to have a drink. It is another form of creative expression by a Japanese graphic designer.

The idea behind the bar is simple: a physical space can be designed with the same attention to detail as a graphic artwork.

From the atmosphere to the music, from the interior to the conversations that unfold there, each element contributes to the identity of nextHome.

A Bar as a Creative Work

Graphic design usually exists on paper, screens, packaging, or objects.

But what happens when a designer creates an entire space?

For nextHome, the answer is a bar.

Behind its heavy door is an intimate interior with striking red walls. The space is built around a counter, with an emphasis on conversation, music, and the freedom to enjoy a night at one's own pace.

nextHome is not designed around karaoke, darts, or large parties.

Instead, it values personal space, a comfortable distance between people, and the small details that give a place its character.

The bar is members-only, reflecting an approach to hospitality built around trust and mutual consideration.

From Graphic Design to Wearable Artwork

The creative work does not stop at the bar's entrance.

Through nextfarm, nextHome also develops original graphic products, including a collection of twelve animal-themed T-shirt designs.

Cats, hedgehogs, rabbits, and other animals become subjects for graphic interpretations that combine illustration, symbolism, and visual storytelling.

Rather than treating the T-shirt as an advertising souvenir for a bar, the collection presents each design as a piece of graphic artwork that can be worn.

The designs originate from the same independent creative practice behind nextHome.

They are connected not by a single visual style, but by an interest in turning ideas into images, objects, and experiences.

Designed in Osaka, Available Worldwide

Although nextHome is a physical place in Japan, its graphic works are not limited by geography.

The T-shirt collection is available internationally through nextHomeOSAKA on Etsy, with print-on-demand production supporting orders from customers outside Japan.

For customers in Japan, a separate online store is available through STORES.

This allows the creative work originating in a small bar in Osaka to reach people who may never have visited the city.

You do not have to know the bar to appreciate a design.

But knowing where it came from might give the artwork another dimension.

One Place, Many Forms of Expression

The creative activities surrounding nextHome extend beyond graphic design and clothing.

They also include nextFable, a storytelling project that explores fictional characters, music, and AI-generated imagery, including the character Alice Valéry.

Although these projects take different forms, they share a common origin: a desire to create something that exists beyond conventional categories.

A bar can be an artwork.

A T-shirt can carry an idea.

A fictional character can become part of a larger narrative.

And a small creative space in Osaka can connect all of them.
