Don Quixote and the Knight of the Lions: The Madness of Giving Up
An original lion graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — LION 003
What if the greatest madness is not chasing an impossible ideal, but giving up on the person we believe we ought to become?
This is the question behind LION 003, a monochrome lion graphic inspired by Don Quixote—the knight who refuses to accept the world only as it is.

The Strange Sanity of Don Quixote
In Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote, the knight is often judged by people who believe they possess a firmer grasp of reality.
Don Lorenzo meets Don Quixote and discovers a striking contradiction. The man before him can be learned, articulate, and remarkably sensible. Yet when the conversation turns to chivalry, he seems to slip beyond ordinary reason.
Those who spend time with Don Quixote recognize his knowledge. Even so, his devotion to the ideals of a wandering knight leads them to see him as a madman—sometimes even as someone to be pitied.
But is understanding the world the same as accepting everything about it?
The Knight of the Lions
Don Quixote takes on the name Knight of the Lions. It belongs to a man willing to confront danger in the name of ideals that other people have already dismissed.
I chose the lion not simply as a familiar emblem of strength. For me, it points to a more unsettling question: who is really mad—the person fighting for an ideal, or the person who has stopped believing ideals are worth fighting for?
The open mouth and flowing mane give the black-and-white graphic its force. But behind the animal is the figure of Don Quixote, asking us to examine our own compromises.
The Madness of Making Peace with Everything
It is easy to laugh at Don Quixote. His convictions are excessive. His behavior is difficult to defend. From the outside, his struggle can look absurd.
Yet another kind of absurdity is often mistaken for wisdom.
We become accustomed to the lives we have. We learn to explain away what disappoints us. We tell ourselves that fighting for something better is unrealistic.
Perhaps some compromises are necessary. But when resignation becomes our only answer, what happens to the person we once hoped to be?
The idea at the heart of LION 003 is simple: the most troubling madness may be making peace with life exactly as it is, while refusing to fight for what it ought to be.
Can we really laugh at the Knight of the Lions without first asking what we ourselves have surrendered?
A Lion from Osaka, Japan
I work as a graphic designer under the name nextform and run a small members-only bar, nextHome, in Nishishinsaibashi, Osaka.
The atmosphere of the bar late at night, when conversations and thoughts become more concentrated, belongs to the environment in which I create graphic work.
LION 003 takes this literary question out of a book and places it on something ordinary: a T-shirt.
The artwork is monochrome, with a bold lion image on the front. The nextHome logo appears on the back, connecting the piece to its place of origin.
I do not expect a T-shirt to provide an answer. I want it to leave a question that is difficult to ignore.
Who Is Really Mad?
Don Quixote may be foolish. But ridicule is not proof that his ideals are worthless, just as fitting in is not proof of wisdom.
Before laughing at the Knight of the Lions, perhaps we should ask ourselves one thing.
What have we stopped fighting for?
