001. Schrödinger’s Cat — Existence and Imagination

CAT 001 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Monochrome graphic T-shirt featuring a large, front-facing cat portrait.

A cat from a famous thought experiment becomes a question about the life that science leaves out. What color was Schrödinger’s imaginary cat? Was it loved? Those details do not alter quantum physics, but imagining them is precisely the point of this design.

A bold, front-facing monochrome cat portrait for people who enjoy curiosity, science, and the questions a theory cannot answer.

002. White Rabbit — Creativity Beyond Common Sense

RABBIT 002 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Monochrome graphic T-shirt showing a full-body rabbit with upright ears.

Inspired by the White Rabbit in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this full-body rabbit stands for a different kind of journey: the willingness to follow imagination beyond conventional rules.

The idea behind the design is that what looks like madness to one person may be an overflow of creativity to another. A graphic for those who are not afraid to think differently.

003. Don Quixote’s Lion — The Madness of Giving Up

LION 003 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Monochrome graphic T-shirt featuring a lion's open mouth and flowing mane.

The lion comes from the episode in Don Quixote where the knight confronts a lion. He may look ridiculous to the people around him, yet the design turns the accusation of madness around.

Is fighting for an ideal the foolish choice—or is it more foolish to abandon the life you believe you should live? A lion with an open mouth and flowing mane makes that question impossible to ignore.

004. The Monkey Years — The Duration of Life

MONKEY 004 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Monochrome graphic T-shirt featuring a large monkey portrait with detailed eyes and fur.

In the Grimm tale The Duration of Life, humans inherit years from animals, including the monkey. The later years of life become comic, awkward, and sometimes undignified.

This expressive monkey portrait takes the other side: a life does not lose its worth because it is embarrassing, imperfect, or absurd. It is a small celebration of living without requiring every moment to look admirable.

005. The Hedgehog’s Dilemma — Learning the Right Distance

HEDGEHOG 005 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Monochrome graphic T-shirt showing a standing hedgehog looking to the side.

Schopenhauer imagined hedgehogs gathering for warmth, then hurting one another with their spines. They need connection, but closeness brings pain.

A standing hedgehog looking to the side becomes an image of respect, intimacy, and emotional maturity: the difficult search for enough warmth without losing the space each person needs.

006. Tyke the Elephant — A Requiem for Compassion

ELEPHANT 006 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Graphic T-shirt featuring a front-facing elephant with large ears, a long trunk and tusks.

This elephant is not simply an emblem of power. It remembers Tyke, the elephant who died after escaping a circus in Honolulu in 1994, and other elephants harmed in the history of human entertainment.

The frontal portrait asks the viewer to see a living being rather than a spectacle. For those who believe that compassion means noticing the suffering hidden behind what we are taught to enjoy.

007. The Velveteen Rabbit — What Does It Mean to Be Real?

RABBIT 007 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Monochrome graphic T-shirt featuring a rabbit portrait with a bow tie.

The Velveteen Rabbit is a story about a toy becoming real through love. What matters is not flawless appearance but the experience of being cherished.

This design shows a rabbit’s head with a bow tie—distinct from the full-body White Rabbit in design 002. An understated monochrome graphic for people drawn to authenticity, affection, and well-worn stories.

008. Another Hedgehog — A Different View of the Same Dilemma

HEDGEHOG 008 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Graphic T-shirt showing a curled-up hedgehog facing forward, with its belly and paws visible.

A second visual interpretation of Schopenhauer’s Hedgehog’s Dilemma. Unlike 005’s standing side-facing hedgehog, 008 presents a curled-up hedgehog facing forward with its paws visible.

The philosophy is shared, but the posture and personality of the artwork are different. Choose the version that speaks to your own experience of closeness and boundaries.

009. The Owl of Minerva — Wisdom Arrives at Dusk

OWL 009 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Graphic T-shirt featuring a full-body owl perched on a branch, with patterned feathers.

Hegel’s owl of Minerva takes flight at dusk: understanding often arrives only after events have unfolded. The design emerged from the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, when information was abundant but the meaning of the moment was not clear.

An owl perched on a branch is a reminder to keep questioning and observing—even when it is too early to say that we understand.

010. Remember I Love You — The Ten Commandments of Dog Ownership

DOG 010 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Graphic T-shirt featuring a front-facing dog with upright ears and an open mouth.

Inspired by the Ten Commandments of Dog Ownership, this dog graphic reflects on the short time animals share with us and the extraordinary trust they place in human hands.

Look closely for the hidden Japanese expression kenba no rō, associated with devoted service, and the words “Remember I love you” near the dog’s left ear. An image about gratitude, responsibility, and love without conditions.

011. Monty Python’s Dead Parrot — Refusing the Absurd

PARROT 011 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Graphic T-shirt featuring a parrot with a curved beak and a long tail.

The Dead Parrot Sketch exposes the absurdity of insisting that something obviously broken is perfectly fine. This design focuses on a small, pointed detail: the nail that held the bird in place is now removed.

The parrot is a symbol of refusing to remain fixed inside a lifeless convention. A graphic for those who understand that humor can be a form of resistance.

013. The Crossbill — On Being Sane in Insane Places

CROSSBILL 013 original animal graphic T-shirt from Osaka, Japan — Graphic T-shirt combining a crossbill illustration with the words 'ON BEING SANE IN INSANE PLACES'.

This crossbill bird joins the title of David Rosenhan’s 1973 paper, On Being Sane in Insane Places, with a legend in which a bird tries to pull the nails from the crucified Christ. Its crossed beak becomes, in that story, a mark of compassion rather than a defect.

The design asks who gets to decide what counts as normal. Different does not automatically mean wrong. The history of Rosenhan’s study remains debated; the graphic uses its title as a question, not as scientific proof.

What Makes These Japanese Graphic T-Shirts Different?

The common thread is not a single animal or a single style of storytelling. It is the idea that a graphic should carry something worth thinking about.

The 12 monochrome works move between fiction and history, psychology and philosophy, humor and grief. Some ask us to resist familiar assumptions. Others ask us to be kinder to the people and animals around us.

The designs come from nextform, the independent graphic design practice behind nextHome, a members-only bar in Nishishinsaibashi, Osaka. The T-shirts are available internationally through the nextHomeOSAKA Etsy shop.
