RABBIT 007 — The Velveteen Rabbit T-Shirt. An original graphic design inspired by Margery Williams’s children’s book, made for readers and book lovers who remember its question: what does it mean to be real? Here, being loved matters more than looking perfect.

What makes something real?

Is it great skill? Years of experience? A title that others recognize?

We often look for clear standards to decide whether someone or something is genuine.

But are those really what make something real?

The question led me to a children's book: The Velveteen Rabbit.

Becoming Real Through Love

The Velveteen Rabbit is a children's story by Margery Williams, about a toy rabbit made of velveteen.

The rabbit spends time with a child who loves and treasures it.

Being new, beautiful, or perfectly preserved is not what makes it real.

In fact, as the rabbit is loved over time, it becomes worn and shabby.

Yet it is through that love that the rabbit comes closer to becoming real.

This is what stayed with me.

It isn't loved because it is real. It becomes real because it is loved.

Who Gets to Decide What Is Real?

Sometimes we are misled by the appearance of authenticity.

Something that looks impressive. Something that follows the accepted form. Something that has been granted authority by others.

Of course, skill and experience matter.

But if those alone determine what is genuine, I feel we may be missing something important.

To be irreplaceable to someone.

To share time and accumulate memories together.

To become something that one person treasures, even when others see nothing special in it.

I believe there is something real in that, too.

Why I Made a Velveteen Rabbit T-Shirt

I didn't choose The Velveteen Rabbit simply because it is a charming story about an animal.

I wanted to express, through my own graphic design, the question at the heart of the story: what makes something real?

The rabbit I wanted to portray is not an impressive rabbit, or one with extraordinary abilities.

It is a rabbit that became real through being loved.

I don't want the person wearing this T-shirt to have to prove anything.

Or to pretend to be more authentic than someone else.

I would be happy if the design simply reminded someone of the value of being loved, and of caring for someone or something over time.

Perhaps being real is not something we can declare about ourselves.

A Small Bar in Osaka and My Graphic Work

I run a small members-only bar called nextHome in Nishishinsaibashi, Osaka, while also working as a graphic designer under the name nextform.

To me, both a bar and a graphic work can take on a meaning that goes beyond what their creator intended, through the people who spend time with them.

I cannot decide the full value of something just because I made it.

Someone returns to it. Someone cares for it. Someone gives it a place in their life.

Over time, what I have made may become irreplaceable to someone.

Perhaps that is why the story of The Velveteen Rabbit speaks to me.

It isn't loved because it is real. It becomes real because it is loved.

That is the idea I entrusted to this rabbit.
