When the world changes faster than we can understand it, what can philosophy tell us?

This question became urgent during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ordinary life stopped. The future became difficult to imagine. Even the meaning of what was happening seemed to disappear into the fog.

It was in that uncertain period that I drew the owl for OWL 009.

The Owl of Minerva Flies at Dusk

The philosopher G. W. F. Hegel wrote that the owl of Minerva begins its flight only with the falling of dusk.

Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, is associated with an owl. In Hegel’s image, the owl does not fly ahead to announce exactly what tomorrow will bring.

Instead, philosophical understanding comes late. It begins to recognize the shape and meaning of an age after that age has already taken form.

We are often desperate to understand events while they are still unfolding. Yet the very closeness of the present can prevent us from seeing what it means.

Wisdom may arrive not at the beginning, but at twilight.

Drawing an Owl in the Fog of the Pandemic

When the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, uncertainty was not an abstract idea. It was part of everyday life.

The world felt covered in a deep fog. Plans lost their certainty. The familiar rhythms of human relationships and places were disrupted.

What, exactly, was happening to us?

There were statistics, reports, warnings, and endless opinions. But having information is not the same as understanding the meaning of an event.

The owl in OWL 009 was drawn amid that confusion.

It is not an image of someone who possesses all the answers. It is an image born of waiting, thinking, and trying to see through the darkness.

Has Twilight Arrived Yet?

There is a question in the original concept behind this design that still stays with me: perhaps Minerva has not yet decided that our time has reached dusk.

Perhaps we are still standing at the entrance to a long night.

We want the comfort of a conclusion. We want the past to become understandable, with clear lessons and a reassuring ending.

But an event does not become comprehensible just because we wish it were over.

If the owl has not yet taken flight, our task may simply be to remain attentive—to keep asking, observing, and resisting the temptation to pretend that we already know.

For me, that patience is a kind of quiet strength.

An Owl from a Bar in Nishishinsaibashi, Osaka

I work as a graphic designer under the name nextform and run nextHome, a small members-only bar in Nishishinsaibashi, Osaka.

The counter late at night is a place where conversation can slow down and an unfinished thought can remain unfinished.

That atmosphere is closely connected to my design work. Not every question needs to be answered immediately. Sometimes the most honest response is to keep looking.

OWL 009 shows an owl perched on a branch, rendered as a monochrome graphic. Its stillness matters as much as its symbolic association with wisdom.

The nextHome logo on the back connects this graphic to its place of origin.

For Those Who Continue to Search in the Dark

This is not a T-shirt celebrating intelligence as status, or philosophy as something reserved for specialists.

It is for those who continue to ask what the world means, even when there is no clear answer.

For those who remember the uncertainty of the pandemic and resist the urge to turn that experience into a simple, finished story.

Perhaps we still cannot hear the owl’s wings.

But we can keep our attention turned toward the horizon, and leave room for understanding to arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “the owl of Minerva spreads its wings at dusk” mean?

Hegel’s image suggests that philosophical understanding comes into view when a form of life or a historical moment has already developed. The owl does not give us perfect foresight; it is a reminder that reflection often follows experience.

Why connect the Owl of Minerva with the pandemic?

OWL 009 was conceived in the atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The question was not whether one person already possessed the answer, but whether the meaning of such an extraordinary period could truly be understood while it was still unfolding.

Is OWL 009 just an owl design for bird lovers?

It can certainly be appreciated as an owl illustration. Its specific origin, however, is philosophical. The bird is a symbol through which to think about hindsight, knowledge, and the limits of certainty.
