Why Is nextHome a Members-Only Bar? A Different Kind of Night in Osaka
A small bar on the sixth floor of a building in Osaka. No karaoke, no darts, and no promise of a spectacular night. So why does nextHome choose to be members-only?
What Is a Members-Only Bar in Japan?
Japan has many different kinds of bars.
Some are lively and crowded. Others focus on cocktails, music, or conversations with the bartender. In Osaka, even a small bar can become a place where strangers unexpectedly begin talking to each other.
But some bars operate through a membership system.
A members-only bar does not necessarily mean an expensive or luxurious establishment. Membership rules vary from one business to another. Some require introductions, while others have specific registration or invitation procedures.
bar & design nextHome, located in Nishishinsaibashi, Osaka, is one of these members-only bars.
Its membership system was not created to make the bar appear exclusive.
It exists for a more practical and personal reason.
To protect the atmosphere of the place.
A Small Bar Has Its Limits
nextHome is located on the sixth floor of a building near Amerikamura, just outside the busiest part of the neighborhood.

The space is approximately 33 square meters, with a counter at its center.
The bar is generally operated by one person: its owner, who is also a graphic designer.
There is a limited number of seats.
There is a limited amount of time.
And perhaps most importantly, there is a limit to how much the atmosphere of a small room can absorb.
In a large establishment, one person's behavior may go almost unnoticed.
In a small bar, a single guest can change the entire evening.
Sometimes that creates something wonderful. Two strangers begin talking, discover something in common, and leave with an unexpected memory.
Other times, one person's behavior can make everyone else uncomfortable.
For nextHome, a seat is not simply an empty space to fill.
The person sitting there becomes part of the evening.
Membership Is Not a Status Symbol
The word members-only can suggest wealth, prestige, or belonging to a privileged group.
That is not what nextHome is trying to create.
Being a member does not mean being more important than anyone else.
It represents a shared understanding of how to spend time in this particular place.
If someone beside you wants to drink quietly, respect their space.
If a stranger does not want to talk, there is no need to force a conversation.
Enjoy yourself without treating the entire bar as your private room.
These are small considerations.
But after years of running a bar, they become some of the most important ones.
The question is not whether someone is wealthy, fashionable, or influential.
It is much simpler:
Can we take care of this evening together?
A Quiet Bar Does Not Mean a Silent Bar
nextHome has no karaoke or darts.
It is not primarily a place for large groups or loud parties.
But that does not mean every night is silent.
There are evenings filled with laughter and conversation. There are nights when music seems more important than words.
And there are times when someone simply wants to sit with a drink and say very little.
All of those evenings can belong here.
What matters is not absolute silence.
It is the distance between people — understanding when to speak, when to listen, and when to leave someone alone.
At nextHome, being together does not mean having to talk all the time.
A Bar Designed by a Graphic Designer
The owner of nextHome works as a graphic designer under the name nextform.
For him, creating a bar is not entirely different from creating a graphic work.

The height of the counter. The distance between chairs. The lighting. The music. The movement of conversations.
Every detail contributes to the experience of the room.
Membership is part of that design, too.
Not as decoration or a marketing concept, but as a way of deciding how the space can be shared.
The intention is not to create the perfect evening every night.
It is to make room for an evening that feels worth remembering.
Can Tourists Visit nextHome?
This is an important distinction.
Being comfortable visiting alone does not mean anyone can walk in without an introduction.
nextHome operates as a members-only bar.
As a general rule, non-members must be accompanied by an existing member. Special invitations or designated opportunities for non-members may occasionally be offered, but these should not be assumed to be available.
The same membership conditions apply to visitors from overseas.
If you are visiting Osaka and are interested in nextHome, please check the official admission information before making plans.
Membership is not something that can be guaranteed simply by requesting it.
The purpose is to preserve a shared understanding of the space.
Another Side of Osaka at Night
Osaka is known for its energetic nightlife.
The streets around Shinsaibashi and Amerikamura offer countless places to eat, drink, listen to music, and meet people.
nextHome exists close to that energy, but slightly apart from it.
A small room on the sixth floor.
A drink, some music, perhaps a conversation.
Or perhaps no conversation at all.
Membership is simply the structure that helps protect those possibilities.
It is not about creating a place for special people.
It is about treating an ordinary evening as something worth caring for.
